Christ Church C of E Primary School
Christ Church School was founded by the Church of England in 1863 to meet the educational needs of the children of the Shieldfield area of Newcastle, although the present building dates back only to 1939. Over the years, the school has seen many organisational changes but in the mid 1960’s when the City changed to a Comprehensive system of Secondary Education, the school which had hitherto been split into two parts, i.e. Infant and Junior/Senior, reverted to that of being a Primary School catering for children of the 4+ to 11+ age range. At 11+ most children transfer to the Heaton Manor Comprehensive School. In 1965 a Nursery Unit was added, catering for up to 26 children from 3 years onwards.
Children come to this school chiefly from the Shieldfield/Battlefield area although a growing number travel from adjacent districts of the City.
The school has received two notable awards during 2001 in recognition of the progress it had made during that academic year. It was named as the most improved school in the area served by the "Evening Chronicle" in the papers own award scheme and was also awarded a D.F.E.E. "School Achievement Award". The school has also been awarded “Investors in People” status and is currently well on the way to achieving the “Healthy Schools’ Award”.
The school has undergone its latest Ofsted inspection in February 2002 which stated that ‘Christ Church is a good school with many strengths’. Parents can obtain copies of either the summary report or the full report from the school or can access the Ofsted website to obtain the full report.
The school is proud of these awards (which reflect the high standards we are striving for) but we also have a determination to continue to improve in the coming months and years to give our pupils an even better primary education.
