Learning Multiplication Tables

The new National Curriculum 2014 expects all children by the end of Year 4 to know all of their multiplication tables to 12 x 12.

At Christ Church, we are working with pupils and parents to ensure that all of our learners will achieve this goal.

These are just some of the terms used in English for multiplication tables:

  • times tables
  • tables
  • multiplication facts
  • multiplications
  • x facts.

By the end of Year 1- your child must be able to count in multiples of twos, fives and tens.

By the end of Year 2- count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward or backward . Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication 
tables, including recognising odd and even numbers. Show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) anddivision of one number by another cannot.

By the end of Year 3- count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100. recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables. recall and use multiplication and 
division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 
multiplication tables. 

By the end of Year 4- count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1 000. Recall multiplication 
and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12.

At Christ Church, each child from Year 2 onwards has access to Times Table Rock Stars. this online platform is able to be accessed at home on either a tablet or computer. It is a fantastic way of developing times tables confidence and fluency in a safe and educational way. A year 6 children can read, answer and type her answer in less than 1 second!

TOP TIPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD:

  • Your child needs to understand the commutative law of multiplication. This simply means that 3 x 6  is the same as 6 x 3.
  • We encourage our pupils to make links and connections in mathematics, your child should be able to exaplain the inverse relationship between x and ÷  e.g 

3 x 6 = 18

6 x 3 = 18

18 ÷  6 = 3

18 ÷ 3 = 6

  • The ability to count backwards is so important. Practice counting backwards with your child lots. This will improve their confidence with subtraction and division.
  • x10, x100, x1000 and  ÷  10. If your child knows the 6 x table, we want them to know the 60 x table, the 600 x table, the 6000 x table and the 0.6 x table.
  • To answer questions related to product. Product is the answer to a multiplication, so the product of 3 and 6 is 18. Notice the word 'and' in this case means x.
