Art and Design
Intent
All children will gain the skills to enable them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.They will know how art and design shape and reflect history, and contribute to the culture, creativity, diversity and enrichment of our society. Every child will possess an awareness of their own strengths and abilities, ensuring they see Art and Design as an ongoing process driven by perseverance. C
Children will leave our school:
• with the ability to produce a creative piece of work that evidences an understanding of colour, form, texture and pattern. • Proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
• confident and critical analysers of artistic works using the language and vocabulary of art, craft and design; • resilient learners who recognise the opportunities to learn that can be uncovered through mistakes;
• equipped with knowledge about celebrated artists, craft makers and designers throughout history, and understand the historical and cultural significance of their art forms.
Implementation
As they progress through the school all children will:
• Experience a coherent and layered approach to Art and Design with a focus on skills, and developing the mastery of key process of art; painting, printing, textiles and sculpture that improves over time through repetition, refinement and perseverance;
• be exposed to rich and technical artistic vocabulary that increases their ability to evaluate and critically analyse their own and others works of art in a respectful and loving way;
• engage in art lessons with an underpinning of knowledge that ensures children understand the context of the art work as well as the artist they are learning about and being inspired by;
• participate in art lessons that place emphasis on creativity and individuality with freedom to explore using their imaginations whilst continuing to build upon their artistic skills, trusting in their own instincts and developing capabilities;
• explore and create with a wide range of materials;
• build a good knowledge and understanding of different celebrated artists throughout history and from around the globe, allowing them to reflect upon how their works have a place and value within our society.
Impact
Children will:
• become confident and capable of expressing their creativity and uniqueness though a range of different media and artistic formats;
• produce inventive pieces of art that show a steady progression of skill acquisition, moving along the path towards mastery of these skills;
• build up a wealth of knowledge of significant artists throughout history and from a range of cultures, and from this knowledge begin to understand the historical and cultural impact of these art works. This knowledge will help them to see how art and creativity can be an outlet for, and expression of, love and appreciation for the world around them;
• be able to discuss, critique and evaluate their own and others works of art using the associated language of art, craft, sculpture and design;
• uncover their inner artist, who has the drive and self-confidence to create works of art that celebrate their skills and abilities, and find joy and pride in the artistic process from start to finish;
• be inspired to reach for their own artistic star, recognising the value of persevering with an art form to create visual representations of the beauty and wonder in the world around them.
