PE

Intent
Rich opportunity to develop strong fundamental skills whilst building confident, trusting and respectful relationships with themselves and others will inspire children to go on to lead healthy, active lifestyles with the solid foundations in place to continue to seek further challenge, reaching for their own sporting star. All children will learn to value the rewards of perseverance.

Children will leave our school:
• Competent to excel in a broad range of physical activities. They will have developed confident co-ordination, physical control and team-play skills;
• Strategic in their approach to team sports and creative in their approach to dance and movement;
• As confident communicators able to organise themselves and others on the sports field, and able to evaluate and improve their own performance;
• Able to swim safely at least 25 metres and perform safe self-rescue in water;
• With the confidence, motivation an awareness to pursue areas of particular strengths or interests further by joining out-of-school clubs or coaching providers.

Implementation
Our approach to physical education will prioritise:
• A broad curriculum providing opportunities for children to progress in a range of physical activity;
• Opportunities to learn from specialist, expert coaches across the PE. curriculum;
• Communication development through team-play, self-evaluation and peer coaching opportunities;
• Approaches to teaching and lesson structure that maximise participation, develop basic and transferrable skills and promote self-reflection and peer coaching;
• Participation in after school clubs and sports tournaments;
• The opportunity for all children to develop swimming competency;
• Seeking and maintaining links with non-school based clubs and organisations that can provide specialist coaching for different disciplines, allowing children the opportunity to develop certain talents, skills and interests further, and making children aware of these opportunities.

Impact
• All children consistently demonstrate respect, friendship, trust and a strong motivation to progress in PE learning;
• All children enjoy PE;
• All children make marked progress in their command of balance, agility, movement and coordination as well as creativity with movement and basic skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching;
• All children have the opportunity to participate in afterschool clubs and most children will take that opportunity;
• All children have the opportunity to represent the school in sports tournaments and teams will reflect a wide range of participation;
• Children show an increased desire to undertake physical exercise out of school and live healthy lifestyles;
• Most children are able to swim 25 metres by the time they leave Year 6, with effective strategies for performing safe self-rescue in water;
• A number of children attend and go on to attend sport clubs and coaching organisations out of school; children with identified particular strengths in certain disciplines are encouraged and supported to make the most of these opportunities (e.g. supporting parents with transport to trials, making initial contact with organisations on behalf of families.)
