Languages Rationale
 
Intent
 
Children will build knowledge, skills and understanding about other languages and cultures. Teaching will foster an enjoyment of language that will continue beyond school. We will promote a positive attitude and curiosity towards other cultures and celebrate the diversity within our school community.
 
In our school we:
• foster an enjoyment in learning other languages;
• develop speaking, listening and writing skills;
• build confidence, fluency and spontaneity in speaking;
• develop awareness that different languages have different structures and
• help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries.
 
Implementation
 
As children progress through Key Stage 2, all children will learn Spanish:
• in regular interactive and engaging lessons;
• using role-play to ask and answer questions and engage in conversation;.
• through building a bank of vocabulary using songs and games;
• using and responding to dual-language resources;
• participating in Spanish celebrations (Festival of Languages) and
• using the expertise of their peers with Spanish as their first language (peer teachers).
 
Impact
 
• Children will leave with the skills, knowledge and understanding to continue learning languages beyond school.
• Children will be curious about Spanish language and culture and willing to have a go;
• Children will be confident to share their knowledge of languages as peer teachers.
• Children will be able to celebrate other languages, cultures and take pride in the diversity within our school community.
