Design and Technology

Intent

All children will develop a creative and practical mind-set that enables them to solve everyday challenges in an innovative and imaginative way. They will be risk-takers, innovators, rigorous and inspiring in their pursuit of technological creativity.  They will persevere when faced with difficulties, trusting in themselves to find a way to become a Design and Technology star.

Children will:

  • be resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable young learners who are not afraid to tackle a challenge and take a risk in finding a solution in an increasingly technological world;
  • evaluate existing products and find ways to make them better and more suitable to the needs of others;
  • build high-quality prototypes and products for a range of users;
  • develop the technical and practical expertise necessary to create these high-quality prototypes.

Implementation

In order to achieve our aims children will:

  •  experience and actively participate in inspiring, thought provoking and highly practical lessons;
  •  develop design skills though research, generating and developing ideas, drawing templates or making mock-ups, through diagrams, drawings or discussion;
  • build up practical skills, safely using a range of simple tools and techniques, through a layered and broad curriculum;
  • make the most of opportunities to draw upon, and further consolidate knowledge in, mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art;
  • be exposed to the technical and mechanical language of the technological world and understand the process and outcomes these words relate to;
  • be given a safe, supportive and loving environment in which to critique, analyse, evaluate and constructively criticise and test their own, and others, ideas and work, all with a view to refine and improve the designing and making process.

Impact

Children will:

  • have built a “tool kit” of practical and transferable skills that enable them solve problems in our rapidly changing world;
  • be able to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values;
  • have a good technical vocabulary related to the equipment, practice ad processes involved with designing and making products;
  • be appreciative of the importance of reflective practice and become effective at critiquing, evaluating and refining their own and others work in a respectful and positive way;

recognise the importance Design and Technology holds in our everyday lives, and how through evolution of ideas, designs, functions and application of products has an essential contribution to make to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of our society.

  • have a balanced perspective on where their food comes from, what effects it has on themselves and the planet and what the implications for the future may be, both environmentally and economically.;
  • be fluent in the language related to cooking and working with food.

Implementation

As they progress through the school all children will:

  • have cooking opportunities to create a range of sweet and savoury dishes that complement a broad and balanced curriculum;
  • persevere to become masters in the use of basic kitchen equipment that is age appropriate and matches their capabilities;
  • consider the environmental and financial impact of the produce we consume and take this into account when creating their dishes;
  • be respectful of the dietary needs and requirements of others, for either Religious, health or personal reasons.
